We install Owens Corning architectural shingles as the default. A laminated architectural shingle is two layers bonded together, which is where its wind rating, its shadow line, and its weight come from. Three-tab is a single layer with cutouts.
It is cheaper by the square, and it shows every deck irregularity, holds a lower wind rating, and reaches the end of its life sooner. On a Maryland roof that takes April thunderstorm gusts and then bakes through August, the second layer earns its money.
Color is not purely a style question here. A dark roof over a poorly vented attic in a humid subtropical summer runs hot enough to age the shingle from the inside. If the ventilation is weak and the homeowner wants a dark charcoal, we say so, and fixing the ventilation becomes part of the job.
Sealing, Nailing, and the Maryland Temperature Window
Asphalt shingles are not finished when they are nailed. Each course carries a factory sealant strip that has to warm up and bond to the course below it, and that bond is what makes the roof a wind-resistant system instead of a field of loose flaps.
Warm weather does it in a day. Late fall and winter installs need hand sealing at the rakes, eaves, and ridge, because a shingle that never sealed will lift in the first real gust behind a February front.

Nailing is where corners get cut invisibly. Nails belong in the nailing zone, driven flush, at the count the manufacturer specifies for the wind rating being claimed, with more required on high-wind exposures and steep pitches.
A nail driven at an angle, overdriven through the mat, or placed above the zone leaves a shingle held by nothing but sealant. None of that is visible from the ground once the roof is on, which is exactly why it happens.
The Details That Decide Whether a Shingle Roof Leaks
Shingle roofs almost never fail in the middle of a slope. They fail at the edges and the interruptions: the valley where two planes dump water into one channel, the chimney where masonry meets asphalt, the wall of a dormer, the pipe boot whose rubber collar has cracked in the sun, the eave where snowmelt refreezes and backs water up under the courses. Ice and water membrane at the eaves and in the valleys, correct step flashing at walls, counterflashing let into the chimney's mortar joints, and new boots on every penetration are the parts of a bid worth comparing line for line.
