It is named for John Elder, who received a land grant from the King of England. A post office opened here in April 1850 under the spelling Eldersburgh, at a time when the area sat in the Howard district of Anne Arundel County; Howard County was formed in 1851, the post office moved to Carroll County on October 28, 1871, and the name was shortened to Eldersburg in December 1894. The Moses Brown House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church in 1984, the latter one of the earliest Methodist congregations in the United States, in a county that was a birthplace of American Methodism.
