The Short Answer for Laurel

Diakite Roofing & Restoration does roof replacement on Laurel homes in Prince George's County, about 7 miles south of our Columbia base. It starts with a free inspection on the roof itself, and you get a written scope before any install date is set.

  • How long does a Laurel roof replacement take? One day for most homes, tear-off through cleanup.
  • Do the old houses near Main Street need anything different? More planning for access, since the lots are narrow and close together.
  • Does Laurel really get wind damage? Yes. A 2001 tornado left F3-level damage in the city.
  • Who issues the permit? Prince George's County, through its permitting department.

The Difference

Why Laurel homeowners pick us for a new roof

Our owner climbs every Laurel roof with a camera before anyone talks price, and the photos are yours to keep. On the old frame houses near Main Street the job starts with a plan for the dumpster and for shielding the house next door. Out on the newer streets it is usually a clean tear-off, a deck check, and an Owens Corning install finished the same day.

  • Cold-month installs get hand sealed

Laurel sits in USDA hardiness zones 7 and 8, with winter lows near 25 degrees. In that cold a shingle's sealant strip may not bond by itself, so on a cold-season job we hand seal the rakes, eaves, and ridge and tell you so up front.

  • Tight lots get a staging plan

Near Main Street the houses sit close together on narrow lots. Before tear-off day we settle where the dumpster goes, how material gets carried in, and how the neighbor's roof stays protected.

  • 100 feet of gutter on the job

Every full replacement includes 100 feet of gutter, gutter guard, and downspouts, put up along with the new drip edge before the crew leaves.

Roof replacement in a Patuxent River mill town

Old mill houses and postwar streets

Laurel grew up around its cotton mills on the Patuxent. In the 1840s mill president Horace Capron and his partners built housing for close to 300 workers, and the oldest of those frame houses still stand near Main Street, inside the historic district the city council created in 1975.

The rest of the city filled in later. Laurel counted 4,482 residents in 1950 and 10,525 by 1970, and its postwar and newer homes spread out from the old core.

That gives a crew two kinds of job. Near Main Street it means narrow side yards, careful carrying, and a neighbor's roof a few feet away. On the newer streets it is a standard tear-off and a one-day install. Either way we strip to bare wood, replace any boards that have failed, and fix the ventilation while the deck is open.

Heat, cold, and install day

Laurel has a humid subtropical climate, with summer highs around 88 degrees and winter lows near 25. A new shingle is not done when the last nail goes in. The sealant strip on each course has to warm up and bond to the course below it.

When an install falls in the cold months, we hand seal the rakes, eaves, and ridge instead of counting on a warm spell, and the free inspection tells you whether your roof can hold out until spring.

Fresh OSB sheathing over a beige vinyl-sided house, bundles lined up along the ridge under a clear sky

Main Street roofs and the historic district

Inside the Main Street historic district, product and color are worth settling before the order goes in, so we raise it at the inspection. Outside the district you have a much wider range to choose from.

A low-slope section over a porch or an addition gets a membrane instead of shingles, because a shingle at that pitch will not shed water properly. On any Laurel house you see photos of what is failing before we put a number on paper.

The Patuxent, heavy rain, and valleys

Laurel sits on the fall line of the Patuxent River. When Hurricane Agnes hit on June 22, 1972, it brought the greatest flooding ever recorded in Maryland, and a nearby dam was at capacity.

The everyday load is steadier. The Laurel 3 W station, under 3 miles from the city, averages about 47 inches of precipitation a year in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals, with an inch or more on about 12 days. Valleys and roof-to-wall joints take that water first.

So on a Laurel replacement the valleys get new metal, the step flashing is woven into each course at the walls, and the attic gets enough intake to match its exhaust, so moisture is not pushed into the sheathing all winter.

Wind claims and the permit

Laurel's storm record is wind more than hail. On September 24, 2001 a tornado left F3-level damage here, including roof damage at Laurel High School and the Harrison-Beard building. Wind can lift a tab, break its seal, and let it settle back looking normal from the yard, so we photograph creased tabs, lifted ridge caps, and opened wall flashing slope by slope, then write the scope in Xactimate for your carrier.

The county permit is pulled as part of the job. We work Monday through Saturday, 8am to 5pm, and hold a 5.0 rating on Google. Call (667) 200-6656 to book the free inspection.

Watch For These

Signs your Laurel roof needs replacing

  • Shingles that are curled, cracked, or losing granules over whole slopes
  • Tabs that lifted in a windstorm and settled back down with a broken seal
  • Water stains where the roof meets a wall on an older frame house near Main Street
  • Leaks or soft decking under a low-slope porch or addition roof
  • Valleys and gutters that overflow every time a heavy rain comes through

Seeing one of these? Call (667) 200-6656 or book a free inspection.

Included on a Full Replacement

Gutter, guard and downspouts come with a Laurel replacement

A full roof replacement in Laurel includes 100 feet of gutter, gutter guard and downspouts, put up by the same crew on the same job. There is no second visit and no separate bill, and with about 47 inches of precipitation a year here, the water coming off the new roof has a path away from the house.

Included with a full roof replacement. It is not a standalone service, and there is no end date on it.

Our Process

How a Laurel roof replacement works

  1. 01

    Free inspection

Our owner gets up on the roof, photographs each slope, and gives you a straight answer on whether your Laurel roof needs replacing now or still has years in it.

  2. 02

    Written scope and install date

The scope comes in writing: shingle color, the gutter package, and a firm date, with cold-weather sealing planned in if it applies. We pull the Prince George's County permit as part of the job.

  3. 03

    Tear-off and deck check

Everything comes off down to the wood. Rotted or split boards are replaced, and ice and water barrier goes in at the eaves and valleys.

  4. 04

    New roof and cleanup

Underlayment, Owens Corning shingles, flashing, and ridge vent go down, with membrane on any low-slope section. Before we leave, magnets sweep the yard and driveway for nails.

Good to Know

Laurel roof replacement: common questions

How many days does a roof replacement take on a Laurel house?

Most take one day, starting with tear-off in the morning and ending with a clean yard. A steep or complicated roof can need a second day, and your written scope will say so, along with the install date.

Can you replace the roof on an old mill house near Main Street?

Yes. Laurel's oldest homes go back to the 1840s, when the mill built housing for close to 300 workers, and they sit close together on narrow lots. We plan the dumpster spot, the carry path, and protection for the house next door before the crew arrives.

Does the Main Street historic district limit my shingle choice?

It can shape what the roof looks like. Laurel's city council set up the Main Street historic district in 1975, so for a house inside it we settle product and color before ordering. Houses outside the district have far more options.

Who issues the roofing permit for a Laurel replacement?

Laurel is in Prince George's County, and the county's Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement issues residential re-roof permits. We pull the permit as part of the job, and you can read the county's requirements on its own site.

What is included with a full roof replacement in Laurel?

Owens Corning architectural shingles, new flashing and ridge vent, and 100 feet of gutter, gutter guard, and downspouts on the same job. All of it is listed in the written scope, so you know exactly what you are getting before the date is set.
